StanleyStanley
Poor Stanley was visibly shaken when he was retrieved from a shelter's night drop box. The shelter staff thought for sure that someone would be looking for this sweet and affectionate boy. Everyone was shocked when no one came for him. Stanley's about 2.5 years old and roughly 48 pounds. He plays with a soft mouth and seems to be easily corrected.

Stanley is a bit too interested in small dogs and the kitties. He's random with his dog reactivity so he'll do best as the only pet in the home. Stanley is house and crate trained; and he has been around children ages 4 and up. He loves playing with balls and going on car rides!

ClaireClaire
Claire was brought to the shelter when she was found walking around an East Bay city. She's happy, outgoing, curious and very people social. After she was provoked into a fight at a dogpark, Claire has become reactive to other dogs. Her mange has returned after her spay procedure - something we had expected as a reaction to the stress and anesthesia from the surgery. Claire now needs a home that's nurturing enough to nurse her through her mange, yet Alpha enough to help manage her reactivity to other dogs.

Claire is about a year and three months old, and she's about 40lbs. She is crate and house trained. Claire loves to run and runs about 4 miles daily with her foster mom.

Miss Pattycakes

Patty
Miss Pattycakes is a very endearing and affectionate girl! She's great with people but is not kitty-safe. Patty hasn't been observed around toddlers yet but has been great with children 8 years and older. She loves to play with other dogs but will need to learn not every dog is as rough and tough as she is. Patty is about a year old and is a smaller girl at about 35lbs. This little belle of the ball seems to gravitate towards women.

Special thanks to Animal Rescue of Anderson Valley for taking in and vetting this sweet little dumpling!

MaddieGirlMaddie Adoption Pending
We don't know if her timidness is due to genetics or abuse but Maddie needs a nurturing spot where she can discover that the world is not the big scary place that she thinks it is. She has no interest in meeting dogs or other animals and will retreat when she's unsure about a situation. Miss Maddie will do best in a quiet, adult-only home where she can learn to gain a bit of confidence and independence. She's about 1.5 years old and about 40-45lbs. According to the gals at the shelter office, Maddie is a world class cuddler who loves to climb up on to your lap and and stay there until the end of time.

Our kennel reports a big thumbs up for this sweetheart. It may take a few minutes for her to warm up to you but once she does, she's already scheming on how to cuddle or end up on your lap. Maddie's proof that shy girls can still be silly!

6/12: Maddie's coming out of her shell in her foster home! She's doing hucklebutts and is great with the neighbor dogs she meets during her walks. She definitely adores women and is still a tad apprehensive with men.

6/30: Maddie's foster parents have fallen hard for this sweet little girl and have asked to make her a permanent addition to their family!

ListoListo Out For A Spin
Listo in Spanish means smart, clever and even sharp or ready in some instances. He was very outgoing in the beginning and has become a bit reserved during his 15-day stay at the shelter. He arrived with Candy and seems to want to watch over her. Listo was a bit confused but has started coming out of shell since his 5/28 arrival at our kennel. Listo is about 3 years old and roughly 50lbs.

6/15: Listo is waiting for a new foster/permanent home as a new development is presenting challenges for his current foster family who works away from home. Listo seems to have a bit of separation anxiety (which is understandable given his abandonment and shuffling) and will bark if you disappear from his range of vision. His ideal foster/permanent home would be one where someone is home most of the day to show him that people who leave will eventually return. He's been polite to other dogs so far and has been non-confrontational to the ones that snarfed at him. He's very people oriented, affectionate and can be quite the comedian!

6/30: A wonderful family has taken Listo out for a spin and will help him overcome his stress when left alone.

Little ChiefChief - DEAF
Babysitter Needed:

7/1 through 7/5
7/9 through 7/12

Little Chief (we call him Chief Broken Ears) was found wondering all by his lonesone on a Reservation. He's about 21 weeks old and 30-ish pounds so far. He is sweet as candy on a stick and is very people focused. He is full of puppy curiosity and is learning obedience signals in his foster home. He adores his foster family's little girl and their 5yo female Labrador. Chief is generally bouncy and playful but he tones it down a few notches when he's around his foster family's 6yo daughter. This delightful little boy is crate and house trained. Chief's a fairly quiet little guy, the only time he's barked was at a big scary tree at the beach. He's not destructive for a puppy his age although he loves to pull on cords.

ChiefNDixie Although Chief was spinning frequently about 1.5 months ago, he now only spins when he's excited (mealtimes) or wants extra attention. He's on Clomicalm to help modify the behavior. The generic form of Clomicalm is Anafranil which can be purchased at Costco and human pharmacies for about $6 monthly. We hope that he can be eventually weaned off the medication - - we don't know if this is a puppy or OCD thing. We do know that it isn't related to his deafness. OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) behaviors will sometimes disappear as suddenly as they appear and sometimes more work is needed. For more information on spinning, please click here.

5/25: Chief's foster family reports that he is such an utter doll! He was recently attacked by a grouchy male Lab and wouldn't fight back. He's about 21 weeks old now, so Chief will be neutered this week and available the first week of June. Chief loves to seek out little dens and nap in them. He was curious about a cat he recently met, but it took off when he wagged his tail (actually, body) at it. We'll work on additional cat introductions.

6/26: Chief's foster family's going on a couple of mini vacations and we're afraid that a kennel environment might create a setback for his spinning. Is anyone around and up for babysitting this playful little 6mo guy for the above timeslots? Please contact Suz if you can or if you'd like more information on this project.

DEAF DOG INFORMATION
I find deaf dogs very endearing as they have a way of intensely watching you and searching your face for expressions. Signing with your deaf dog is also one of the most beautiful forms of communication on Earth. Training is not that much more difficult as all dogs key off on body language and facial expressions. I've owned 4 deaf dogs and will always have at least 2 - - they are that special.

For more information on deaf dogs, we recommend The Deaf Dog Education Action Fund and really like its pages on deaf dog myths, deaf dog humor and teaching hand signs. Another great resource is the D2Care website.

AmyAmy
Little Amy (on the right, shown here with former rescue Eddie) is a delightful 32lb girl who has tons of energy, curiosity and affection compressed into her petite body. She barked at another shelter dog but her hackles weren't up. She later ignored an obnoxious big male dog who charged her through his kennel; Amy chose to run off and play with her toy instead. She wanted to play with a 13lb terrier and was indifferent to another Bull Terrier female. We think she's about 2 years old.

5/8: Amy never made it to our kennel. One of her transporters fell in love with this little pumpkin and is fostering her. Along with foster failures, we now have transport failures! All good for our wayward eggheads!

5/27: Amy's foster mom reports that this girl is absolutely delightful. She didn't snarf back at the resident BT male who was concerned about sharing his mom. She does seem to have food aggression issues with other dogs so she needs to be fed in her crate during mealtimes in a multi-dog household.

IzzyBooIzzy - Hearing Impaired
Little Izzyboo (on the right) is 6 months old (born December 2008) and about 30lbs. She seems to be able to hear some tones so her hearing might be limited. She was polite to Busefalo so she may be good with submissive males. She is not good with cats, birds and other female dogs.

Izzy Naptime

Izzy knows how to sit and is crate and house broken. She walks nicely on a leash and is a wonderful little traveler. Despite her age, her energy level is about medium. She is not getting along with the resident female bull terrier but adores, and hangs out with, the family's pit bull male. Izzy has been with the same family since birth; her owner is finding it difficult to manage feuding female bull terriers and a newborn. She is very affectionate and people-oriented.

Dutch Bubba Dutch von Wiggles aka Bubba
This sweet 42lb guy has gone through so much! Bubba was abandoned in the streets and had a broken left rear leg that was left untreated for months. Funds were raised last year for his neuter and to insert a pin in his leg. The pin was adjusted as it was pressing against his sciatic nerve and eventually had to be prematurely removed due to his increasing pain. His leg has healed wonderfully but he's been chewing on his foot.

His interim foster dad reports:

He is a very frisky guy who, through his personality, exemplifies the breed. He's a lot of fun; always looking for trouble, loves being with people and in a very puppy-like way, wiggles like a hyperactive worm. He has obviously in the past figured out how to wiggle out of collars/leashes and has a "patented move".

This smallish, white BT would be the perfect pet for a home with time to love him and understanding of what it takes to own a bull terrier. He is more than willing to try getting along with other dogs, but I feel he is so active that the best home would be one where he can spend a lot of "me time" with his person or people.
We're being careful with his next steps as he has been through so pain and surgery in his short life. We're hoping that once his foot completely heals, he'll no longer chew on it. If need be, he'll undergo exploratory surgery to determine if the chewing caused by nerve issues. Amputation would be the last resort, and funds are in escrow for that sugery.

Available in Oregon
This little guy is from our Oregon Rescue; he is housed near Salem, OR.

Scenic! Scenic - Special Needs Mini
Sweet Scenic is about 3-4 years old and 30-35lbs. He's extremely affectionate and loves playing with his Kong.

Scenic Face
He has a heart murmur and will overexert himself while playing with other dogs. For this reason, his ideal home would be where he'll be the only dog. For more information about lovable guy, please contact Beth Olvera.

Advance applications for foster/permanent homes are always welcomed!

LullabyLullaby, now Lilly ADOPTED!
Poor Lilly is back to her perky self after a difficult spay (she was carrying two almost full-term puppies). She seems to be polite with dogs as long as they acknowledge that she's the Queen of the Universe. Lilly is absolutely awesome with people - - a very affectionate, mellow and extremely social spicedrop. Lily is about 1.5 years old and 40 pounds. She is crate and almost fully house trained; and she's ready to be the center of your world.

5/4: Lilly is doing wonderfully in her interim foster home. She was polite to an offleash Chihuahua that ran up to her; and she has been playing with her foster family's two submissive Bull Terriers. Her ideal foster/forever home is where she'd be the only pet as she occasionally has resource guarding issues with other dogs.

5/17: Lilly has scored a wonderful spot where she gets to be with her foster mom almost 24/7! Please check back on her progress.

5/28: Lilly's foster parents couldn't part with this little party girl after she took Berkeley by storm!

Little Tina
Tina ADOPTION PENDING
This little girl loves to cuddle and give kisses; she's about a year old and weighs in at 25lbs. Tina is a social butterfly with people and dogs; and she has invited a Burmese cat to play with her. She's partied with Poodles, a Bichon Frise, a Fox Terrier and a couple of Portuguese Water Dogs. Tina will need to learn basic obedience and leash manners. She'll bark at other dogs but only because she wants to meet and play with them. She is crate trained and getting the hang of a doggie door.

5/23: Tina (now Bianca) is such a delightful little girl that her foster parents will be making her a permanent addition to their family!

Zuma!Zuma - Special Needs ADOPTION PENDING
Little Zuma is about 19 weeks old. This gray brindle girl has glaucoma in her left eye; the pressure is currently being stabilized with eyedrops. Zuma is a wonderful puppy who loves people, other dogs and cats.

5/16: Zuma's just about healed from her enucleation and spay. With her brindle coloring, you can hardly tell that she's missing an eye. Her eternal wink is ADORABLE! ===>

Special thanks to Angie C. for donating one of your awesome Bull Terrier paintings to help Zuma. The auction proceeds were enough to fund her surgeries!

5/16: Zuma's foster sister and parents have decided that they couldn't part with this little lovebug!

CandyCandy (now Ellie Mae) ADOPTED!
When Animal Services tried to return a stray Listo to his owner, they found an abandoned house and Candy in a crate in the yard; she was sitting in about two inches of excrement. Listo seems to keep watch over Candy - - is he smart enough to escape from his yard to find help for her? Candy has been a bit reserved and confused but is perking up at our kennel. Her tail does eventually wag and you'll also get a "Sit" from her in time. She seems eager to please, especially if a treat's involved. Candy is about 1.5 years old and 35-40lbs.

6/7: Ellie Mae is on a test drive and is doing great! She plays with the neighbor's dog and gets to go to work with her 'dad'. He confirms that she's a major snugglebug!

BusafeloBusefalo
Busefalo entered our program when his beloved family lost their home due to foreclosure. This mellow boy is 4.5yo and about 70lbs. He is good with other dogs but is not cat-safe.

Busefalo is extremely low energy and currently has no aspirations but to be a 24/7 owner-operator of a comfortable couch. His bloodwork confirmed a pokey thyroid so he's on synthetic hormone replacements, possibly for the rest of his life. We hope to see a perkier and leaner guy soon. We'll help him lose some weight and will strengthen his immune system before he gets neutered.

6/21: Busefalo is doing great in his foster home. He enjoys co-owning comfy beds and couches with his fan club of bull terrier and pit bull girls.

Special thanks to Simon H. for driving this guy from San Diego and putting up with 9.5 hours of ear licks! Thanks also to Katie Earle (Deaf Dog Rescue of San Diego) and Terry Houston for being Plan B, Jennifer W. and Janet A. for being Plan C, and Nicole of Just A Dog for the pictures and evaluation of this big boy!
